- James River Association - The James River Association provides a strong voice for the James River on regional and statewide issues related to water quality, land use, and aquatic resources.
- Virginia DEQ - The Department of Environmental Quality is the major agency in Virginia for cotrolling point source discharges. They also coordinate the water monitoring programs throughout the state.
- VA Dept of Conservation and Recreation - DCR has the prime responsibility for non-point discharges into state waters. The are also responsible for all of the State Parks.
- VA DGIF - The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is responsidle for fish monitoring, stocking and control (to a limited extent). They are also involved with the other game of the state.
- Chesapeake Bay Foundation - The Chesapeake Bay Foundation has a variety of initriatives aimed at improving the healthe of the bay waters and in particular the habitat of the bay. They have an outstanding educational program and the CRPA sponsors public school teachers from Alleghgany, Bath and Highland Counties to their school.
- Northern Virginia Water Monitoring - In Northern Virginia, all monitoring is handled by the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Convervation District. It is located at George Mason University and is headed by Joanna Cornell.
- Canaan Valley Institute - This group is a major player in the preservation of the environment. They provide support to environmental organizations in Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland. They are particuarly interested in water issues.
- Citizens for Water Quality (CWQ) - This informal association holds conferences each year at the University of Virginia that focus on significant water issues throughout the state.
- Save Our Streams - This group operates under the Izaak Walton League and is the leader in Virginia in training and testing /certification for macroinvertebrate water monitoring.
- The Nature Conservancy (TNC) - Focused on the preservation both aquatic and land animals and habitat. Owners of a large tract of land on Warm Springs Mountain.
- Alleghany Highlands - This is the site of the Virginian Review Newspaper and it focuses on the activities in the Alleghany Highlands
- Cowpasture Flow and Height Gauge - The USGS has a gauge in McKinneys Hollow that produces real time information of the Cowpasture's flow and height. This link takes you directly to this information
- Bullpasture Flow and Height Gauge - The US Geological Survey has a gauge at Williamsville on the Bullpasture that measures the flow and height of the stream in real time. This link allows you to view graphs of this information.
- Rain - Bath County - Provides current rainfall information for Bath County
- Rain - Alleghany County - Rain information for Alleghany County, VA
- Rain - Highland County - Current Rain Information for Highland County
- Shenandoah Riverkeeper - This site has information about the fisk kill on the Shenandoah and includes some information about the Cowpasture
- Army Corps of Engineers listing of navigable and non-navigable rivers in Virginia. - The Cowpasture is judged navigable only between confluence of the James and Simpson Creek (south of I64).
